a Sunshine Coast maker handcrafting fresh, unpasteurised organic tempe using biodynamic and Australian Certified Organic legumes (90% sourced locally, the rest 100% Australian-grown).

Rooted in Indonesian tradition, my small-batch unpasteurised tempe is a clean, fermented plant-based protein made for everyone — not just vegos and vegans. Because it’s unpasteurised, it’s alive with natural goodness, full of flavour, and as versatile as it is nourishing.

My mission is simple: to make fresh, unpasteurised organic tempe accessible to the local community and beyond — food handcrafted from clean, organic Aussie-grown legumes, alive with nutrients and flavour, made to fuel your body while caring for the planet.

I start with my signature fresh, unpasteurised tempe, lovingly fermented and packed in landfill-biodegradable food-grade bags. These bags can be tossed into the general rubbish bin, where they break down rapidly — over 90% faster than conventional plastic — transforming into natural fertiliser without leaving harmful microplastics behind.

Delicious product. I loved the chickpea tempe fried with some olive oil. The black bean tempe I added to my bolognese sauce and the kids ate it happily. A fantastic local and ethical business.

MY STORY

Hello! Thanks so much for your support of my small business!

So, with this opportunity, I’d like to introduce myself.

My name is Pio, short for Scorpio, yes, like the star sign!

I was born & bred in Indonesia, which is also home to the best wholefood plant-based proteins on the planet.

Back in 2019, I was living in Jakarta, Indonesia, with my Aussie wife & our son, working at an online travel agency managing a marketing team.

We'd been discussing options for our son's education & decided that we'd move to Australia in 2020 so our son could start Prep in the Aussie school system.

I started to think about what business I could do in Australia - something with a purpose that also positively impacts others.

I've been following a vegan lifestyle since April 2012, & I felt called to do something that would link to a plant-based lifestyle that is inclusive & has a positive impact on the planet.

One of my favourite foods & a plant-based protein source in our home is tempe.

A seed was planted in my mind that I could take this part of Indonesia to Australia with me & create access to fresh unpasteurised organic tempe for the local community.

The pandemic ended up speeding up our relocation plans & after many false starts & 6 challenging months apart from my family, I finally landed on Aussie soil on September 2nd, 2020.

During my hotel quarantine in Sydney, the name EAT CLEAN MATE was created & my idea for producing & selling fresh organic soy-free tempe bloomed.

After many hours of research, plenty of experimenting, a lot of paperwork & bureaucratic hoops to jump through, I could see my dream of bringing fresh organic tempe to Aussie homes a reality,

Finally, on March 11th, 2022, the Sunshine Coast Council granted my license to manufacture tempeh!

I decided to focus on fresh unpasteurised organic soy-free, but this idea is evolving to incorporate traditional soy-based on retailers' requests. 

I'm dedicated to showing Aussies & the world that our food choices can be healthy & delicious.
